Starting out in the Technology World.

Hey, All!

If anyone starts reading this soon.. I figured I would start with where I started and what I've done over the past few years to get where I am at now.

I first started in IT in between my Junior and Senior year in college as an Intern. I was Help Desk. It gave me a great understanding of what I had been learning while studying towards my degrees. I ended up double majoring in Computer Networking and Network Security. During my last semester in college, I started looking for jobs, but ended up talking with my Employer of where I interned. After talking with them, it worked out for me to come back and I continued with Help Desk. Many IT professionals will say this, but Help Desk is a necessary evil. I found it to be a pain at times, but you learn a ton from it. I recommend continuing at least "some" help desk tasks from time to time as technology is always changing, especially operating systems and security measures.

So, I continued up the chain with that same employer for a few more years. I became a System Administrator managing all sorts of technologies. Windows Servers, Windows Updates, backups, networks, VPNs, new tech implementations, etc. You name it, I had influence on how it would be implemented and supported.

I was with that same company for about 6 years total. I ended up finding myself knowing just about everything there was to know there. I started getting very complacent. I started to look around at some jobs, here and there. An owner of a small local MSP reached out to me on Linked In. I had worked with MSPs during projects and upgrade, but never considered actually working for one.  I ended up taking a job with them and I have been with them for about 4 years now. I have found it to be very different from what I was used to. It is a lot faster pace, and there is a lot to know about a lot of customers. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but it has helped me grow quickly as an IT professional. One thing that has been enjoyable is I have been here since the growth has started taking place. Being a smaller company, we have a very open and casual work environment where we have a lot of extra perks that most corporate environments can't provide. We continue to grow and it has presented some challenges, but the growth is exciting, and I am looking forward to what comes in the next few years.

I plan to talk a little about my certification path and what I've done and what I plan to do as well. Until next time!
